Years 1 &
2
Each of the
first two years of medical school is divided into 4 blocks (Year 01
= Blocks 1-4; Year 02 = Blocks 5-8). The first 8 weeks of each
block covers curricular materials presented in lectures,
laboratories, clinical experiences and small group study in the
patient-centered learning (PCL) environment. Week 9 is Assessment
Week and Week 10 is Special Studies Week.
Assessment Week (Week
9):
-
Examinations during this
week typically consist of a multiple choice question (MCQ) exam of
130-150 questions with 1-2 smaller (20-25 question) laboratory
exams.
-
Student learning in the
PCL environment is measured by the case exams that evaluate
student’s depth and breadth of knowledge. These tests are in
essay format designed to address aspects of basic and clinical
sciences that were covered by the patient cases in PCL during the
block.
-
Clinical skills exams
consist of student completion of an exam utilizing a standardized
patient. Testing involves evaluating student proficiency at
history taking, general physical and focused physical exams.
Special Studies Week
(Week 10):
-
Special Studies Week is
an opportunity for students to remediate deficiencies they may
have had during Assessment Week for single component failures
(i.e. MCQ, Case Exam, or Clinical Skills). When students
satisfactorily complete all assessment components, Special Studies
is considered as a week break between blocks.
Years 3 & 4
-
Students are evaluated
utilizing the following assessment tools:
-
Tracking of student
performance using a computerized student database of clinical
experiences, including student narrative reflections about those
experiences.
-
Preceptor evaluations of
observations of student performance in clinical rotations.
-
Student notes
-
Shelf Exams
-
OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Exams)
-
Self-assessment and peer assessment
-
USMLE Board Exams (Steps 1 & 2).
